CESLIE’S PICK:
APPELLATION WINE NY
Appellation Wine NY is New York City's premiere organic wine store. Take the time in 2008 to learn about and TASTE organically produced wines. Organic wine usually tastes better, is affordable, is great for the environment and easy to buy. I highly recommend visiting my favorite store for a wide variety and friendly environment: 156 Tenth Avenue in Manhattan. If you aren't in NYC, then feel free to call enthusiastic proprietor Scott Pactor at 212-741-9474 and of course, visit and shop from their informative site.
My two favorite wines that are delicious, interesting and unique for under $20 hostess gifts this season are:
Domaine Ostertag Alsace Sylvaner "Vieilles Vignes" $19.99 (biodynamic)
According to Scott, most growers have planted other grapes in place of their Sylvaner. Thus, these vines of 50 - 70 years are a true treat. Enjoy concentrated petrol, mineral and apple notes with great acidity!
Producer: Domaine Ostertag
Varietal: Sylvaner
Category: White Wine
Region: France : Alsace
Old River Road Sierra Foothills Cabernet Sauvignon "Ponderosa Vineyard" $16.99
According to Scott, it’s big, it’s bad, it’s lush and it’s loaded with red berry and black cherry aromas. The wine will push you around a bit like a Sierra Foothills Cabernet should. Drink it by itself or with rib eye steak.
Producer: Old River Road
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
Category: Red Wine
CESLIE’S TIP: Make an effort to locate and shop at family-owned and operated specialty stores for unique culinary products. Ask to speak with the resident expert (usually one of the owners) and they will be more than happy to give you tips (and tastes if you are at a wine store) about entertaining, recipes, and how-to serve.
